The anti-monopoly agency Philippine Competition Commission has raised their concern regarding the "dying" competition on free-to-air television, years after the Duterte-controlled House of Representatives junked the franchise renewal application of ABS-CBN Corporation.
In their report, the agency said that the Gozon-led media giant, GMA Network dominates the free TV industry with 93% combined market share because of its platforms, which creates almost a monopoly in the TV industry.
The agency recommended that the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) should clarify its jurisdictions over blocktime agreement deals of various TV networks to ensure fairness and support for TV stations and other OTT platforms such as iWant TFC, Cignal Play, Viva One, Netflix and other various platforms.
PCC also recommended that the government should bring back the franchise of ABS-CBN Corporation, to ensure the comeback of a much healthier and competitive free TV industry.
