Controversial Filmmaker Darryl Yap and his upcoming movie, "The R*p*sts of Pepsi Paloma," has encountered a delay in its review process by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) due to the submission of incomplete requirements.
As of January 29, 2025, the MTRCB confirmed that it had not received the necessary materials to proceed with the film's evaluation.
The film, which delves into the life of the late actress Pepsi Paloma, has been a focal point of controversy, particularly concerning its title. In response to concerns from certain Philippine cinemas regarding the inclusion of the word "r*p*sts" in the title, Yap opted to release the film domestically under the shortened title "Pepsi Paloma," while retaining the original title for international audiences.
Legal challenges have further complicated the film's release. Television host Vic Sotto has filed multiple legal actions against Yap, including a writ of habeas data petition and 19 counts of cyber libel. These actions stem from allegations that the film's promotional materials implicate Sotto in events related to Paloma's life.
Despite these hurdles, Yap remains steadfast in his intention to premiere the film in Philippine cinemas on February 5, 2025. However, without the MTRCB's review and classification, the film's scheduled release faces potential delays. The MTRCB's review process is a mandatory step for films seeking public exhibition in the Philippines, ensuring that content adheres to national standards and is appropriately classified for audiences.
The situation underscores the critical importance of filmmakers adhering to regulatory requirements and timelines, especially when dealing with sensitive subject matter. As the release date approaches, it remains to be seen how the pending MTRCB review and ongoing legal disputes will impact the film's availability to the public.
